What/Who is D2Y?

Dhammaduta Development Youth

…quite a mouthful,isn’t it?

Though it neatly describes the very nature of our group, we prefer to go by the name of ‘D2Y’, a trendier and cooler term to brand ourselves (it looks better on shirts and water tumblers too). However, certain dictionaries describe us as :

__________________________________________________________________________
D2Y /di:tu:waI / dee-too-wai
1. abbrev Dhammaduta Development Youth
2. adjective cool, dynamic, innovative, creative, inspired, Dhamma-based, that activity is so obviously D2Y…,
3. noun a group or individual that believes in Dhamma-based development and education, possessing of positive qualities (see 2).

D2YC /di:tu:waIs: / dee-too-wai-see

How We Roll

Being Buddhist doesn’t mean being boring. On the contrary, we’ve never had so much fun! But it’s a fine line to walk for energetic, emotional and passionate youths. To channel these bundles of dynamic energy into a positive and constructive outlet is a challenge for any group. The D2Y however, is out to prove that we’ve walked that fine line and made it all the way across!

Everybody wants to be heard but the difference is how you are heard and who hears you. We believe that self expression is vital to the development of a person.

Things We Do

Whoever said that “youth is wasted on the young” obviously wasn’t a member of the D2Y. Our activities aren’t all just fun and games. We are aware of the responsibility we have towards the youth who have committed their time to us. While many activities are aimed at bonding and strengthening friendship, just as much emphasis is placed on personal development and Dhamma knowledge.

It’s great to have fun but we’re aware that there will come a time when the youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. We don’t know what tomorrow might bring but we know what we can do right now. To help them prepare for that time, we’ve been organizing various workshops, trips and sharing sessions with knowledgeable teachers. Just to an idea of what we’ve done:

• Study tour to Kong Meng San, Singapore
• Chanting workshop in Buddhist Maha Vihara
• Welfare trip to Taman Sinar Harapan, Kuala Kubu Bahru
• ‘Dhamma in Action’ trip to Sasanarakha Buddhist Sanctuary
• “Lawatan Sambil Belajar” to Gua Tempurung
• Cultural Exchange to Fo Guang Shan, Dong Zhen
• Camp Exchange Program with Seck Kian Eenh, Melaka
• International Buddhist Youth Seminar, Fo Guang Shan, Taiwan
• D2Y Bi-Annual Parent’s Appreciation Day
• D2Y Annual Chinese New Year Caroling
• D2Y Annual Wesak Event
• D2Y Annual Camp X (Leadership/Development Camp)

and many more. A key element in these activities is the involvement of the youths themselves in deciding what area they would like to develop. In this manner, not only will we impart knowledge that we feel are necessary, but the youths themselves can receive training in areas they feel are important. This also encourages the youth to open up and speak their minds. We’ve heard many wild and zany ideas so if you’re the wacky type, you might just feel right at home.

The Dhammaduta Development Youth Camp (D2YC)

An exciting bi-annual camp that provides exciting challenges and opportunities for both the participants and the organizers for personal growth. The program of the camp comprise of a vibrant mix of activities aimed at strengthening personal skills and knowledge of the Buddha Dhamma. An excellent platform for testing oneself and making spiritual friends, we’ve been creating a spiritual network for more than 10 years. Come and let those spiritual creative juices flow!

What can best be described as a professional bunch of amateurs, we are really just Buddhist friends who find joy in spreading goodwill and positive values through the language of music. With a repertoire as varied as the people involved, we strive to pass on a smile and that warm fuzzy feeling through song, in ways that mere words cannot convey. It just goes to show that Dhamma can be found in anything, even a simple song.
